About Me

I am a first-year PhD student at SOAS University. I previously held positions in migration policy and research, including with the Mission of Canada to the EU, the European Commission and the Migration Policy Institute. I have an interdisciplinary background, with an undergraduate degree in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford, and postgraduate degrees in European Studies from the University of Amsterdam and in Public Administration from Erasmus University Rotterdam, specialising in the governance of migration and diversity.

When I’m not at my desk, you’ll find me out running or cycling, or at the nearest folk jam.

My Research

International cooperation agreements on migration have received increasing scholarly attention in recent years and frequently make headlines. In the European context, focus tends to be on the EU’s “externalisation” policies, and the interests and power dynamics at stake for “partner” countries remain under explored. In my research, I propose to build on theories and typologies of migration diplomacy through a comparative case study of Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria’s diverging engagement trajectories with the EU.

Impact of My Research

With migration partnerships increasingly a buzzword in migration and foreign policy, beyond controversial headlines and striking sums of money, the background and impact of such agreements remain somewhat blurred. Through an in-depth case study of migration cooperation between the Maghreb and the European Union, I aim to contribute to an increased understanding of how migration politics shape and are shaped by international diplomacy.
