RCUK doctoral stipends for 2019/20 have been published here
All applicants should read the Guidance Notes carefully before applying to the DTP. They should also familiarise themselves with the Postgraduate Funding Guide. Only one application for an ESRC studentship beginning in 2020 may be submitted to the UBEL DTP.
Before applying, students should make sure that they have checked the pathway information and made contact with their prospective department. Departments may have internal deadlines before the formal DTP deadline, so it is very important that applicants get in touch with their prospective department and pathway leader and are aware of their application procedures.
On accessing the FluidReview online system for the first time, you will be asked to register for an account. You will then be able to use the sign-in details associated with this account to access previously saved versions of your application content prior to submission, or to make a full application if you are invited to do so.
Once you have created an account and/or logged in, you will need to click on your name under the heading Application ID, against the Main Studentship Competition, which will have been pre-selected for you. This will take you to the links to complete your preliminary application, with information requested exactly as in the sample pdf version of the form for this.
You will also be asked to complete an Equal Opportunities Monitoring section before you can submit your preliminary application – though you can choose non-disclosure options for all of the questions within this, should you choose to.
Please note: the online submission system sends notifications, so make sure you check your spam folder in case they are sent there.
Please read the guidance notes carefully:
Full applications to the UBEL DTP will include:
- A completed application form
- A research proposal up to four pages (including a title, abstract and a full description of your proposed research topic)
- Two references and your referees’ contact information.
Please note the following internal deadlines for Birkbeck:
ARCHAEOLOGY AND HERITAGE STUDIES – Friday 13 December 2019
LAW AND CRIMINOLOGY – Friday 13 December 2019

How to apply: you should include a covering letter with your application stating that you wish to be considered for an ESRC studentship. This letter should make clear that Birkbeck and the UBEL DTP are your first choice in applying for an ESRC studentship and explain why your academic studies to date and proposed research project make you a suitable candidate for this highly competitive source of funding.
