My research: The UK government has announced an ambition to halve inappropriate antibiotic prescribing by 2021. In order to achieve this, we will require robust measures for antibiotic prescribing and a comprehensive understanding of the components of ‘inappropriate’ prescribing. I am currently working on measuring antibiotic prescribing in secondary care in the UK. My project aims to research and better understand the drivers for ‘appropriate’ and ‘inappropriate’ prescribing in hospitals to better inform targeted and hopefully more effective interventions to improve antibiotic prescribing for better patient outcomes. This research will contribute towards global efforts to control the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistant infections.
