The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is an international research institute based near Vienna, Austria. It runs an annual Young Scientists Summer Programme for PhD students to spend three months at the institute to undertake a research project related to the work they’re doing. For 2023, this will be from 1 June to 31 August.

More information can be found on their website: Application information | IIASA. There are several research groups at IIASA which strongly align with ESRC interests, for example, the Economics of Equal Life Chances group or Migration and Sustainable Development group to mention a couple.

Students are not expected to do this unfunded, but should be aware that there is no separate additional budget from ESRC to participate in this program. Any student who might be interested should discuss this further with their DTP. IIASA estimates it costs about 5,500 EUR to cover expenses for the three month duration.

The 2023 programme is now open for applications and the closing date is 12 January 2023.

OLIve – the Open Learning Initiative needs mentors!

OLIve – the Open Learning Initiative – helps people from refugee backgrounds find out about and if appropriate to apply to UK universities. It’s been running since 2016. UBEL students began helping out as mentors for OLIve students last year.

Mentors work with a small number of OLIve students to advise them on their UCAS and Sanctuary Scholarship applications.  Most of this work is online, though we will also have a few in-person meetings in London, Manchester and Bristol.

We are currently looking for online mentors for some of last year’s OLIve students who still want help with their UCAS personal statements and scholarship applications.  We’re also looking for mentors to do similar work with students from the OLIve course running, online, from mid-January-March 2023, in partnership with the national NGO, Refugee Education UK.

Mentors’ time commitment is around an hour a week. There’s some initial training, and ongoing supervision. If you might be interested, please contact ubel-dtp@ucl.ac.uk .
